Senior Research Officer – Precision Livestock Management

You will:

Contribute towards the research efforts of CQUniversity and its partners, specifically working on a Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) funded project exploring sensor technologies for detecting calving issues and calf loss in Northern Australian beef production systems.

Work on the project’s two components: the first involves an evaluation of an implantable in-animal sensor for detection of calving events; the second involves evaluation of a range of on-animal sensor to determine location and behaviour of cows prior to, during and after calving.

Be based within CQUniversity’s Precision Livestock Management (PLM) team; recognised as an international leader in the field of sensor and data driven livestock research. Our area of speciality is developing and testing new and emerging technologies to improve on-farm welfare, profitability and productivity outcomes.

You are responsible for:

  • Conducting research under limited supervision, either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently, and the contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research.
  • Leading on-farm research involving the deployment of a range of sensors on cattle in remote Northern Australian production systems.
  • Participating in professional activities including, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise (subject to availability of funds).
  • Advising within the field of the staff member’s research to postgraduate students.
  • Undertaking limited administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the staff member.
  • Developing a limited amount of research-related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff.
  • Undertaking experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures.
  • Attending meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the staff member is connected, and/or at department and/or school meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.
  • Contributing to teaching in the field/discipline of your research or consultancy (if required)

Total salary: $98,571 to $117,057 (plus 17% superannuation and leave loading)
